I learned in a behavior management class once that people self-punish themselves when they don't reach goals. For example "If I don't get an A on my Exam I will not be able to eat Ice Cream for a month."
When I learned that setting goals and self-punishing was a normal thing I was outraged. It had never crossed my mind as an option in life. Result? I'm terribly easy going on myself. And now at age 25+ I'm realizing that its going to ruin me.
I applied for college cause my friends did. I took classes cause my friends did. I graduated and have worked multiple jobs never being satisfied in any of them because I don't know what I want to do...really.
So now I'm on the verge of a breakdown in life and realized that "Setting a Goal" might improve my situation.
So I'm going to apply to go back to school. This time for something I want to do. Will I get into the program? Probably not. Will I test well on the GRE? Probably not. Will I conquer my current unhappiness for the moment by at least trying? I sure hope so.
That's what goals are about right? Trying for something you want and growing along the way regardless of the outcome. Some people might not feel satisfied unless they achieved said goal-but I'm new at this and will settle for trying.
I might make myself a certificate of accomplishment just for getting this far.
