It'll mess you up.

Why does everyone hate religion so much?

I was curious about a proff of mine. He's 42, and a former catholic priest. He spent ten years in India attending Seminary in order to become a priest and has now given it up. From what I can tell he went back to school and has now been a therapist/professor for 6-7 years. I understand reasons for career changes. I myself plan on maybe having some myself. But does anyone else think it's weird to go from being a catholic priest to not being one?

I figure it can't exactly correlate to Mormonism. In the Mormon religion you can be a bishop or Stake President for a time, and then your calling is changed and you aren't a bishop anymore, but it seems to me that being a priest is different.

So I stayed after class yesterday and asked him. I straight up asked him is he was still catholic. He said he was, and that he still attended church. "Every week?" I asked. He hesitated and explained that he attended many churches now, and that although primarily Catholic he had felt for some time that the Catholic church did not cover everything, or in other words didn't have all the answers. Then he told me he had an LDS chapel down the street from his home, and had always respected the religion. Specifically I think we talked about similarities in celibacy. Fun!

I've got another proff that brings up religion occasionally in class. He got a little nasty two weeks ago and I made an attempt to comment that his remarks seemed a bit biased, and off subject (However I get a bit heated when I have to make such comments, and they are not always well spoken) Specifically he was using "religion" to represent an example of one way clients who need depth and self-reflection (insight) think they are getting it--but he said something to the effect that that's a load a croc. or Bull or maybe he said the sh word. I don't know, whatever it was of course i got offended. I don't see religion as a way-side subject, I see it as "The" subject of my ultimate existence. So I made my comment and he changed directions realizing maybe we weren't all eating up what he was spewing down. He also has a problem with treatment facilities that I find amusing.

So now I'm determined to talk to him after class and figure out why he is the way he is when it comes to religion.

Dr. Brown, this really big professor I have (he's a bit intimidating) but his dad was a pastor of a church, and you know what he says about religion? He says "Religion will mess you up." That's about all he's ever said about the subject. Sometimes he says things are "off the chain!" I explained to him that I don't know what that means. We get along pretty well even if religion has messed him up.
