I decided there will be no rhyme or reason to what I post from my trips and in what order I do it.
Thursday March 25th
Whirlwind tour today courtesy of our good sister Haley. Again Marcene and I were excited to be with an experienced parisian navigator. We only had to make a few decisions and then we were off. We started off at the Hotel d’Ville followed by a quick jaunt over to Notre Dame. The weather was hideous, Marcene and Haley huddled under Haley’s little umbrella while I clung to my Columbia rain jacket. Despite the weather there were millions of tourist. Haley says it’s very apparent that spring break has begun.
Notre Dame was much darker than St. Paul’s. You walk in and feel the gothic structure envelope you. We climbed to the top, effectively burning off the mornings pastries. At the top we were determined to locate two particular gargoyles that my father had visited about thirty years ago after he came off his mission. He served in Belgium but was then able to visit some of Europe before heading home. So we combed the top until we came across monsieur gargoyle sticking out tongue and monsieur gargoyle eating a bunch of grapes. It was awesome thinking that two generations of Millers had stood on the same spot, taking goofy photos and trying to avoid the watchful eye of security. They had put up some sort of wire fence barrier all around the top that made it difficult to recreate the exact photo but we tried. We also took pictures with Quasi Moto’s bell, and struck some Quasi Moto type poses.
Next we visited France’s oldest tree. Similar to Britain’s oldest door we’re determined to touch anything super old-except for old people. Then we visited Haley’s favorite bookstore. She really is a sap for all those poets and painters and crap like that. I’m starting to believe that this study abroad program and she were meant for each other. She talks of never coming back. What a crazy!
The weather had cheered by now and we decided to make the most of it by heading over to Le Sacre Coeur. Le Sacre Coeur is that gorgeous church featured in the movie Amelie. I think I have enjoyed this one the most because the artwork was so beautiful, and the church is located up on a hill overlooking the city. We sat for a bit deciphering the metaphors in the huge painting of Christ. He’s got Mary, the pope, and peter at his right hand. Peter, or was it Paul? Is holding a big golden key. And the weird thing is that at Peter/Paul’s feet is a chicken. The only think we could come up with was the cock crowing on the third day? We then lost Marcene and she had to come find us up in a pew.
We walked over to the Dali display and then got treats up in the Mont martre hills in some area called Boheme, which has a bunch of artists and gelato salesman. I tried to buy a nutella crepe (I plan to eat as many as I can while here) with a 5 pound note. The lady just shooed it away. Took me a sec to realize I was trying to pay her with another countries money.
Next we headed to the Louvre. However by the time we had all stood in the Louvre Loo Line and emptied our bladders the museum had closed. Oops! So we opted for thrift store shopping in Moray? I never saw the name spelled out and had to trust Haley at her word. At one point we passed a group of shady looking men who all jumped as we passed and stared us down. No idea what they were up to. I'n guessing drugs, or maybe they were perusing a nudy magazine. I don't trust jumpy guys.
We poked around some tiny thrift stores, I bought some great ankle boots then we got Thai food. My favorite!!! The plan was to climb the Eiffel tower that night but Haley had worn Marcene and I completely out so instead we headed back to the hotel and rested our weary feet.
Today is going to busier than yesterday! Plus we have an added trip out to Haley’s host families. They are going to make us dinner.
