Quick update in case you were wondering.....
I got down to Utah Saturday night and drove out to Roosevelt on Monday. I started calling phone numbers of places for rent I found online (2 total). Folks in Roosevelt don't really use the Internet to advertise so I stopped by a 7-11 and picked up a couple local newspapers. Both newspapers held identical "for rent" sections and yielded no new leads. I stopped by a realtor's office on the main strip. It's run by a woman named Shar and on her sign and business cards there is an AWFUL colored pencil drawing of what I'm assuming IS Shar. I didn't actually meet her and I imagine this drawing was the work of a dear sweet grandchild of hers, who at the time was flattered but in a number of years will be so embarrassed that his drawing ended up being the literal "face" of the business. At Shar's I found some good leads, as they keep a list of rental contacts for in town. I dutifully called every number on the list. Several had no voicemails which I'm learning is another thing that happens in this town. No one wants voicemail so they just don't get it. I hate voicemail myself but never actually realized I had the power to just NOT sign up for it. How novel. Maybe I'll learn some things living in this small town.
The rental list led nowhere. I talked to a nice gentleman named LeRoy who told me to talk to DeVonna, who might have some leads. I met with DeVonna who gave me directions to her home by saying "I live in town next to THE bridge, and behind THAT big pile of dirt." In her defense It is a small town and those two descriptors should have guided my way, but I had to stop and ask where the big pile of dirt was. Turns out it was a really big pile of dirt and I felt a bit silly not knowing where it was.
Well...DeVonna was sorta scary and she tried to talk me into moving into her basement, while at the same time being real sweet to me but also yelling at her poor grandchildren. I tried to imagine telling folks "I live next to THE big pile of dirt in DeVonna's basement" but decided that life had better things in store for me.
I stopped by work and chatted with a lady my age who was going to FHE later and decided that since my attempts at finding a place to rent weren't working out yet, I would try the local ward and see if there were any leads on housing. I lucked out and had two phone numbers by the time I left.
I sent some texts and by the next day had written a rent check for October. I ended up finding two ladies who work as school teachers in Roosevelt. I think they both just graduated from school and took the first school district who offered them decent money. We're a little bit in the same boat that way. Best part is that the room in the townhouse that was available is the master, so I'll get a good sized closet and live with tow nice gals. I'm pretty excited. I'm still waiting on my furniture to be shipped, but hopefully it will come this weekend and I can get a little bit settled before I start work on Monday!
