I know dogwood isn't in the running but what about dogBODY...I think it's a family name :) I love Violet as a family name as well.
Hey now...don't be too hasty in dismissing Arbutus. I think it has real potential!
oregon grape is actually called mahonia, which i think would be a cool name. its an awesome plant that they have found is resistant to staph infections, even really strong ones like MRSA. plus mahonia just sounds prettier than oregon grape.
The book "Belle Prater's Boy" has a character whose middle name is Arbutus.
Mahonia IS really pretty. It sounds a bit like that girls name from Johnny Lingo. "Mahonna, you ugly!"
