Solution Therapy

We're studying different theories of therapy right now in a class. One which is called Solution Based therapy doesn't bother itself with the past, but instead focuses only on current issues and problems. It focuses on the positive and builds from there. One key thing they do in this form of therapy is called "The Miracle Question." It involves posing a hypothetical to the clients.

A married couple comes in with marital problem, maybe communication or such, and they know what the problem is, but aren't sure how to solve it. So you say to them, lets say you two go to bed tonight and while you're asleep your problem magically disappears. However when you wake up in the morning you don't know this, cause you were asleep. How would you know the problem is fixed? What would you see, or what would your spouse do that would indicate the problem is gone?

It's an interesting yet simple approach because then the client will describe what they want to see happen in specifics, and in that way you can start finding a way to reach those specifics. It also helps the couple communicate about each others actions in a productive, and visual way.

So I would pose the same question to you. If some problem you are dealing with magically disappeared as you slept, when you woke up how would you know it was gone? And how difficult would it be to make what you want a reality?
