December 8th 1980

I'm not a huge Beatles fan, nor am I particularly nostalgic about dead people, but I read a very well written article tonight talking about the death of John Lennon 29 years ago, and I reacted. I think it was in part because I was merely a suckling babe at the time of his death and certainly have no memory of him, but also because I know he meant a lot to other people, so in some small humanities way he means something to me.
I thought this photo was the bomb. Just John and Yoko chilling in New York outside their apartment building "The Dakota". I love the black leather, the pocket hands, and the berets. It does seem haunting to know he was only feet away from the spot of his death.
Every year when Thanksgiving comes around I try and remember this quote I heard once that has nothing to do with Thanksgiving, really, but it talks about turkeys. It says, "we're all just like turkeys who wake up Thanksgiving morning expecting breakfast as usual." Truth is we don't know the length of our lives, can't control it. But we can control how our lives are lived. Whether you're "Imagining" a world with no hunger, or just trying to make someones day a little brighter, it matters.
