Equality and Equity

I've got an idea in my head that won't work its way out in any real tangible way. It has to do with gender equality and gender equity. For a review of these terms:

GENDER EQUALITY: Equal treatment of women and men in laws and policies, and equal access to resources and services within families, communities and society at large.
GENDER EQUITY: Fairness and justice in the distribution of benefits and responsibilities between women and men. Programmes and policies that specifically empower women are often needed to achieve this

Reading these two definitions it's gets a little confusing as to how they're different. (I'm still working on this myself) but today in class as we were discussing the U.S.'s long history of patriarchy and the effect that has had on male/female equality I wondered about some stuff. In class we also discussed the dichotomy of most cultures as only being labeled as male or female, and the effect that has on individuals whose sex doesn't fit one of those categories...

okay but I'm getting off topic. As I thought about gender equality I immediately thought of the church. Which by the way it is set up would meet the definition of a Patriarchal religion--but I've never seen it-nor do I now see it as a church that promotes inequality between the sexes. What do you folks think of this? I was raised with specific traditional gender roles in my home. Dad brought home the bacon and mom fried it--but never did I ever feel, nor was it taught that my father had any more power than my mom. My aunts and uncles offered the same example. Because I identified this as "normal" growing up, I believe I was saved from the damaging thoughts that pervade culture. I was protected by the gospel truth as to the equality of not just men vs women but of mankind.

How is it possible that men are given the priesthood-but that it doesn't go to their heads? How is it that women don't grab all the children start their own religion with priestesses and male nannies (cute male nannies)?

I just find this interesting as it represents to me, another example of how the church teaches correct principles. Another way the gospel sets it's standards high above that of the worlds and almost inexplicably it works..

I've always liked the concept of "equal but different" to explain how our church and families work. The priesthood may be power...but it is also a huge huge responsibility...so most men learn early on that they are to use it wisely or else...dumdumdum... I like having clearly defined gender roles. But I can see how this would be disheartening to an individual that does not have a strong gender identity. Ultimately we all have the potential to have all the good traits and characteristics that God has regardless of gender.

i dont think god ordained society to be patriarchal though, and it is. i could go off on a rant, but i have a cold :p i'm glad you do have an understanding of the gospel to help you through that class though :)
