So amazing. Last night I took my client with me to a community forum over in North Portland. The purpose of the forum was to discuss the Killing of Aaron Campbell and dialogue about Portland's history with the African American community. Specifically noting the violence that happens often between community members and police officers.
So my client was so so about me dragging her along to this meeting, until she spotted a good friend of hers named Reverend RW. The reverend is an activist who previously worked with my client at the Coffee Creek facility. My client caught up with the reverend and after that was more invested in the meeting.
The Reverend, during her speech to the group, plead for all people to support families and to protect children. She spoke passionately about the injustices of the world, and called for action. She also pointed out my client, praising her for her hard work to turn her life around, and recognizing her strong will to parent her child and care for him. It was awesome! Then she called for everyone in attendance to give a round of applause for my client. I honestly almost cried hearing all those people clapping for my client and recognizing her hard work.
It was amazing. I went home from work last night completely fulfilled with my day and excited for more.
Yesterday was also notable as it was the internship fair that will help determine where I will be placed for my 15months of Clinical work. I had to show up at 1pm and stay til 4. That sounds easy enough but of course I didn't give myself enough time to stop by Kinkos to print off the resumes I would need. As I arrived at Kinkos I realized I forgot my wallet. Ran home and tore my room apart eventually finding my wallet had fallen between my bed and the wall. I arrived ten minutes late to the fair and undoubtedly tarnished my first impression. Also when speaking with the Intern guy from the VA I mentioned that the veterans I volunteer with all seem to be WWII verterans and I wondered what age range he usually worked with in therapy. He seemed to think I knew nothing about wars and suggested I must be confused about the age, since there are so few WWII veterans around. I "must" have been working with Vietnam verterans. But I'm pretty sure I know what my Grandpa Miller is like, and I know he was a WWII verteran, so that sucked.
Best part was I got home from the fair, having forgotten I tore my room apart looking for the wallet, and for a second thought I had been robbed. awesome.
The V-day beach trip was awesome too. I'll post about that soon.
