The Uintah Basin (the place I now live) has had a crazy warm and sunny winter thus far so today I took advantage of this and went for a hike up Dry Gulch Canyon to McConkie something something petroglyphs. I remember it sounded very mormon but that's all I can remember.
I had the hike totally to myself and it was gorgeous. Did you know I love rocks, cliffs, sedimentary layers, volcanic basalt and all the like? Well I do, and today's hike was right up my alley. The Petroglyphs started out small with swirls, sunbursts followed by women figures, deer with antlers and a goat. Then they got more sophisticated with elaborate warriors holding what appeared to be the severed heads of their enemy. The warriors were decked out in headdresses and large hats, big chest necklaces or maybe plates and some of them had enormous feet. Others had dimpled chests which either represented armor or maybe chest hair??? I'm not sure. Since the drawings are fairly rudimentary it leaves a lot to be imagined. Whoever built this trail saved the best for last. You come to a sign the says "Bear ????" and you look far up and can faintly see the life size petroglyph of a man being mauled by a huge grizzly bear. It's pretty cool.

I of course took a million photos. Seems like if I don't take pictures these days I feel later as though they never happened. I got home and promptly erased all the photos accidentally. Thankfully other people with cameras have visited this place and have taken photos almost as good as mine.
